Post Crime Intervention

How DISHA work:

  • DISHA has taken permissions from Special Inspector General of Police (Amravati Range) and Superintendent of Police, Amravati to collect data from police stations and work for rights and restoration of crime victim and dependents
  • The cases of victim of violent crime (murder, rape) are taken from Victim Support Desk (Assegaon Purna), police stations and community (through referral) or from Telephone Helpline.
  • The social worker conducts field and systemic level activities(below mentioned) for right and restoration of crime victim and dependents
  • DISHA network with various NGOs, voluntary organisations, government organisations and judiciary for rehabilitation of crime victim and dependents

Activities for restoration of crime victim:

Field Level

  • Victim Helpline (Phone No. 7666102103 from 9 am to 9 pm) is free, informative and outreach service for needy victims in Amravati district of Maharashtra. The telephone call on above number is attended and documented in Helpline register by social worker of DISHA NGO.

    Depending upon the call following help is extended to victim/ Dependent / Caller free of cost:

    1. Appropriate information,

    2. Socio-legal guidance,

    3. Outreach support services (If needed)

    The receiver of call discuss request with administrative head of DISHA NGO. The team decides for appropriate intervention needs to be taken in respective case. Honest and realistic efforts made to fulfil the need or resolve query of victim with accepted social-legal norms. The queries or request beyond social, legal mandate are not entertained.

  • Victim Support Desk at Police station (Assegaon Purna)

    The Social worker runs Victim Support Desk on every Saturday at Assegaon Purna Police station, Amravati district. The Social worker at police station or on phone call (as the case may be) help needy victim and family answering queries, giving information for smooth navigation in Criminal Justice System, helping to handle trauma and difficulties post-crime, socio-legal guidance, support services for restoration, and follow-up at police station, court and crime prevention. It acts as bridge between Criminal Justice System and the victim, offering support and information regarding the case status, role and rights within the Criminal Justice System.

  • Family Support Services

    The Social worker collects information of victim from police station. After Home visit, social worker identifies the most needy, poor and vulnerable victim and family for case intervention. Appropriate case intervention, support services, follow up is taken to achieve need-based restoration of victim and family.

  • Counselling to victim or family

    The social worker builds rapport and identifies difficulties, issues and concern of victim and family. Then he/she tries to help victim and family to restore back to routine and lead a peaceful life.

  • Education for children

    Through home visit, children on the edge of dropping out and recently dropped out from school are identified. Every attempt and help is extended to mainstream these children in education by giving them educational material, sponsorship or admissions in residential school with follow up.

  • Vocational courses for children or family members

    The children or family members engaged in petty job or trade are given information about available short and long term vocational courses for better livelihood opportunities. Depending upon their interest and aptitude, social worker helps them to undergo vocational courses to improve skills and employability.

Systemic Level

  • Work closely with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism

    The social worker builds rapport and work closely with POLICE PATIL and Tanta Mukta Samiti (TMS), DAKSHATA committee at police station level. The most needy, vulnerable and cases having potentials of re-offense are studied and taken out for interventions to resolve dispute. DISHA try to build capacity of committee to identify and work towards effective resolution of dispute in potential cases for crime prevention.

  • Training & Awareness Programme for stakeholders

    DISHA conduct training programme for police, judicial officer, and lawyer to emphasise the need of right and restoration to victim through District Legal Services Authority, Taluka Legal Services Committees. The awareness programmes on right, restoration of victim, social legislation and crime prevention are taken in schools, colleges and villages with the help of POLICE PATIL and Tanta Mukta Samiti (TMS), DAKSHATA committee.

Policy Advocacy through Public Interest Litigation

DISHA filed a Public Interest Litigation for drafting and implementation of ‘Victim Compensation Scheme’ (Section 357 A, The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973). DISHA took rigorous follow up for drafting the scheme. The meetings are conducted with Judiciary, Police department to implement this scheme for restoration of crime victim and family. The High Court of Mumbai compelled state government to allot Rs. 1 crore 23 lakhs for Victim Compensation Scheme and also directed Maharashtra State Legal Services Authorities to conduct awareness programme for said scheme.
