Equality in access to justice is the vision of DISHA which is linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 16) and the UN’s core principles on the rehabilitation of victims. In the Indian criminal justice system, a victim is a person whose complaint makes the criminal justice system work. But the criminal justice system in prosecuting the accused forgets that the crime has ruined the life of the victim and he may need rehabilitation. Neither the conviction nor the acquittal of the accused can compensate the victim.
The crime, whatever its form, has far-reaching consequences for the victim and his family. But victims and their families affected by murder, sexual offenses, and domestic violence need more help. In such a case, the victim should be rehabilitated in such a way that he or she can resume his or her life with dignity, irrespective of his / her gender, age, caste, religion or region.
